WIRE SHELVES
Let's talk about the most basic simple style of shelving on the market and probably even the most economical first. That would be your classic Rubbermaid metal wire open space white-colored shelving. This is the standard cookie-cutter product that most home builders use in new construction.
And the reason this is the most favorable with home builders is one cost, two simple, and three economical to have sub-contractors install. From a homeowner's perspective. These wire shelves are very adjustable and module in design. It can be as simple as one six-foot long wire shelf with two angled brackets, and end cap brackets, then that's it.
To a more complex design such as from floor to ceiling with various hanging bars, and cubical separations.
A middle-of-the-road design would be the track system. How this works is it can be two or three metal vertical tracks secured to the wall. Then you can use adjustable brackets and wire shelves anywhere on these tracks.
Typical width sizes for wire shelves are; 12", 16", 24" and lengths came come in 8ft, 10ft, 12ft+.
The biggest issues I have with these wire shelves are their durability and weight capacity. Because by design they are just metal wires welded together with a lot of open gaps and spacing between them. It is not exactly very structurally sound, compared to other methods I will talk about later.
One time years ago my brother's wire shelf completely failed, crashed, and made a loud sound. He overloaded too much weight.
Typical installation of these wire shelves doesn't always require you to secure them into wood studs. And since it's only in drywall open space, it is weaker. But whenever I install these wire shelves I always find at least a couple of studs to secure to. Or just use heavy-duty toggle bolts in drywall. This is the only way to add strength and stability to these wire shelves without getting too complicated.
METAL SHELVES
The next style of shelving I want to talk about is the metal shelves. The kind you find in commercial settings. These are usually stainless steel materials and any restaurant, retail or commercial business uses these metal shelves.
I've installed these metal shelves at my local PizzaHous restaurant in the back where they prep the food. Yes of course you will pay more upfront for these better quality shelves than the cheaper wire shelving you find at homedepot or lowes. But long term these will outlast any wire shelving. And because they are stainless steel, it's easy to clean them.
WOOD SHELVES
The other very common style of shelving is wood. But be cautious of what you buy because in the marketplace not every product is real wood at all.
In fact, most of the "wood" claimed products out there are actually made of MDF or Particle Board. Which ARE NOT REAL WOOD. Meaning they will be damaged easier and faster. The material is very porous and airy. Whenever you spill liquids on it, the MDF will swell up like a sponge and deform, rendering it useless.
They sell these products everywhere because again manufacturers don't care if you are getting a quality product. They care about the costs being low, and profit margins high.
Because it costs the manufacturers more money to produce a real wood product vs. the fake stuff.
Then you also need to decide on the design of the brackets that hang the wall-mounted shelves. The brackets can be wood, metal, black pipe, or something else entirely. If you plan on putting heavier items on these wood shelves, find brackets that are heavy-duty and support more weight.
If your not sure get more brackets to use per shelf instead of just two.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
And the best way to get ideas on what type of shelving you want to be installed is just to go on Pinterest and look at other people's projects. Your almost guaranteed to find something you like.
Because designs and options can be endless. If you want a custom build, I can help you with that as well. Just give me as much detail as you can on what you want to install for shelving. Or even better send me a quick sketch of your idea? I've also talked about closets and storage systems in other posts. Check them out here; CLOSET INSTALL - STORAGE SOLUTIONS.
