Here are a few things to think about beforehand. When shopping online at these major manufacturers they have an endless database of products to choose from.
If you are going to install the metal-style storage cabinets here are a few things to consider first before getting started.
Are you only installing upper cabinets or lower cabinets, or both? How big of a space are you planning on utilizing for these metal cabinets? A lot of the time people like to use an entire wall of storage cabinets. And the great thing about this metal storage system is its pretty module and flexible.
This means you can add or subtract as your lifestyle and habits change over time. They install onto the wall studs and themselves. You can add workbenches to the lower base cabinets. And the tall base cabinets have tons of storage and adjustable shelves inside.
Like everything in life. A solid foundation is key to this type of installation. I have a laser level that will keep everything aligned and leveled properly during installation.
Because not any part of construction is perfect and floors are never 100% perfectly level and straight. It's not uncommon for a 20 ft span to vary as much as 2 to 3 inches from one spot to another.
The good thing about most of these metal storage cabinets is they have adjustable leveling feet. But these leveling feet do stop at some point. So it's still best to install the cabinets on as level of a floor foundation as reasonably possible.
If you do not use a laser level, installing these multiple cabinets will not be easy and they won't alight properly and look very uneven afterward. This is not what you want as a finished product. In my experience, I feel that metal storage cabinets if taken care of properly and not abused. Should last a lot longer than your typical wood/MDF/Particle Board materials that flood the marketplace nowadays.
This is definitely a wise long-term investment into your garage and storage solutions.
OVERHEAD METAL STORAGE RACKS
This style of a storage system is good because it frees up valuable real estate space on the floor and walls of your garage. But an important caution when going this route. You MUST make sure the overhead storage unit is securely fastened and attached to ROOFING WOOD TRUSSES in the ceiling.
I've run into a new construction house installing one of these systems and the builder decided to change the typical 24" on center trusses. And it was something like 17.5". Since it was different from the standard conventional spacing. We had to use some 2x6 lumber boards and more lag bolts to secure the boards first to the roof trusses. Then the metal overhead racks to those 2x6 boards.
So ALWAYS, always double-check the spacing for your ceiling roof trusses before installing this style of product!
I know my installations are good because I always put my life on the line and climb onto the racks to make sure it'll at least support my weight. And it does and is good.
If this installation is not done correctly you will have severe consequences to deal with afterward when it falls and damages your vehicle or injures someone else.
WAREHOUSE STYLE STORAGE RACKS
Probably the most common style of garage storage products is your typical warehouse-style racks. They can be something as simple as the Costco tubular bars with adjustable wire shelf racks. To the actual warehouse heavy duty rectangle tubing and heavy-duty shelves.

The product starts off as raw materials, then gets manufactured somewhere, then gets packaged and stored at some warehouse/location. Then eventually you order it online or at the store. Finally, it gets put on a delivery vehicle and dropped at your doorstep.
A lot of moving parts are involved with this entire process. Sometimes quality control has bad days, and people make mistakes. I've seen where the product and box are damaged. This could've been during shipping. I've seen where hardware or parts are missing, which means it failed a QC test.
At the end of the day though, if you ordered the GARAGE STORAGE PRODUCT online from a major company. Most of the time as long as you reach back out to the company quickly. They will send you the replacement or damaged product or pieces for free. And I will always 100% let you know if something is damaged or missing before I start building.
And if your product did end up having a damaged or missing part. Plan for at least a couple of weeks or longer for the manufacturer to fulfill the replacement order. Especially nowadays after the pandemic, everything will take longer than usual. Having realistic expectations will go a long way.
