What type of TV wall mount can I use?

It all comes down to personal preference. When you shop online or in a store there are literally dozens and dozens of different styles and variations. Generally, you will see a few of the common ones I will describe here. The two main types are a simple vertical front to back tilting style. The second common style is the full swing articulating motion bracket, which turns left/right and up/down.

Some other variations to these are a single flat bar fixed mount that has no tilting or full-motion functions. Also an "X" style full swing but a single bar wall bracket mount, which I do not recommend using for a bigger heavier TV.

How do I know if my TV will fit the wall mounting bracket I'm going to buy? When you look at the item description on the box it should say on it what size and weight capacity the wall mount can handle. Look in your TV owner's manual to find out what the weight rating is. Newer style TVs are getting lighter as time goes on. But if you plan on mounting an older television they are usually heavier.

What is VESA hole pattern?

It's basically a standardized system adopted by the TV manufacturers. It is the measurement vertically and horizontally of the four holes behind your TV. This is how the wall mount bracket attaches behind your TV.

Two ways to find the dimensions are directly in your owner's manual or simply by measuring it. It is measured in millimeters so if you use a standard fraction tape measure google the conversion online, easy! Then just match up to the wall mount your getting and thats how you know it will fit.

How much is a wall mount bracket?

The cost of the different style brackets ranges widely. From $20-$200. Generally, a fixed wall mount will be cheaper than the full motion swing mount. But honestly, if you do a quick search on Google and Amazon, the prices are closely similar.

Just do not buy a really cheap mount because the quality of the steel and durability will not be of higher quality. I have installed a fair amount that does feel "cheap and flimsy". So trust me when I say this, there is a difference.

Where should I mount my TV?

Again this all comes down to personal preference and whether you'll be watching in your kitchen while cooking or lounging on your favorite living room couch. If you plan on just sitting in your living room sofa and will look directly at it on the wall in front of you a fixed or vertical tilting bracket will do the job. Can I mount my TV above my fireplace? Yes of course!

Let's say you cook a lot and you have an open kitchen/living room layout. And you enjoy watching TV with your family while working hard in the kitchen. Then consider getting a full swing motion mounting bracket. Then after your done cooking and eating, just swing your TV back to the wall and enjoy catching up with Netflix on your couch in the living room.

Maybe you watch a little TV before going to sleep in your bedroom. But let's say you have a bunch of wall-mounted items and furniture on the walls in the way. And the only space you have open is that one corner of the room. Consider getting a corner wall mount bracket, be sure to measure the size of your TV before going that route.

Okay, but what if in my living room above my fireplace I have a built-in hole cavity in the wall that is 2 ft deep? I'm glad you asked! This is what I consider a special situation. On Amazon, they do sell a longer arm extension full swing bracket up to 40" reach. If your depth is greater than this, then consider mounting the TV in another location or I can help you figure out how to add structural framing supports to build it out.

What about the wall surface?

The most common type of wall surface on newer homes is wood/metal stud framing with the drywall as the finish. The other common wall surface is masonry such as concrete block, brick, stone, tile, etc. In older homes, you might have lath and plaster and 1/4" thin wood wall paneling.

Regardless of the type of wall surface its very important to use the correct mounting hardware for the wall surface you will be mounting your TV on. This is the foundation to correctly wall mounting your television. Even to this day after I secure a bracket to the wall, I immediately hang from it like monkey bars in a playground. Because if it can support my body weight I have confidence it'll hold on tight to your TV too.

Why does my TV look crooked?

If you have already had your TV wall mounted and it looks wanky, honestly you didn't have me install your TV! All jokes aside, a lot of other installers skip this step or hurry it up, or forget to tighten the proper screws and over time your TV will sag. Instead, I take my time and focus on making sure it's level, and tilted exactly the way you want it.
