Do I need a battery or hardwired ring video doorbell?
It depends. I always suggest going the hardwired route for a couple of reasons. First, you don't need to take out the battery and recharge all the time. Second, power will always be available to your ring video doorbell, unless you physically turn the breaker off or the power goes out.
Although a hardwired doorbell seems like no problem. Sometimes it's not possible and it makes sense getting a battery-powered ring doorbell. In the case of a battery powered doorbell, you can place it anywhere you want essentially. Well almost anywhere, just don't go too far from your wifi router. And if its already miles from your router, Ring has a range extender you plug into a regular receptacle.
Maybe you live in a really, really old house and there is no wire at all to the front door i.e. no existing hardwired doorbell. And unless you want to hire a licensed electrician to run your new wiring, it just makes sense to get the battery doorbell.
Another reason to get the battery powered doorbell even if you have an existing hardwired doorbell is height and angle placement. In new construction, depending on the builder and electrical contractor. They have a general standard height they follow to mount the hardwired doorbell. And honestly, sometimes it's just too low or mainly not adjusted to the right angle to get your driveway, front yard, etc.
Yes, the ring video doorbell kit comes with wedges that go in between the doorbell and the exterior wall. You can use either one and sometimes this works out great! And sometimes it's still not to your preference. But when in doubt and your really unsure how it'll work out, get the battery powered doorbell.
Which one, Doorbell, Doorbell 2, Doorbell Pro, Doorbell Elite, Peephole Cam?
Lots of choices, they range in price from $100-$500. The Doorbell 1 and 2 are battery powered or hardwired. The Peephole Cam is battery powered. And the Doorbell Pro and Doorbell Elite are hardwired. Video quality gets higher with the more expensive models. The Doorbell Elite requires a junction box and an ethernet connection, which is a stronger signal than wifi.
Of course, it depends on how much you want to spend. Honestly, if you do a search on Amazon or at Costco they have deals running all the time. Regardless of which one you buy, they all have two-way talk, customizable motion detects zone settings, live view mode, push notifications and require you to download the app to operate.
They all support Ring's Professional Monitoring System. Which is a monthly/yearly subscription plan, not required but an upgraded option.
What is Ring Professional Monitoring?
Basically, if you choose to get the professional monitoring, Ring will be watching all your devices 24/7. When your not home and if a problem occurs with one of your sensors or devices, ring support will call you to make sure everything is okay and if not they can dispatch the local police and fire departments to your home.
Just remember that if the local PD and fire dept get to your home and its a false alarm. Ring will charge you a fee for the false alarm.
They have two Ring Protect Plans, the basic and the plus. The basic plan is $3/month or $30 annually and only supports one video doorbell or one camera. And is not supported with professional monitoring. The plus plan is $10 per month or $100 annually and is supported with professional monitoring. They both, however, do store video in the cloud for 60 days, which is not included with the free no plan option.
Again it's not required to purchase the Ring Protect Plans. As long as your checking your notifications throughout the day you should be fine. And make sure you always have an internet connection this way you can open the app and view your device in live mode anywhere.
My exterior wall is brick, stucco, stone can I still install the video doorbell?
Of course, you can! Inside all the Ring devices they provide the appropriate masonry drill bit size. Along with the necessary wall anchors for any brick, concrete block, stucco, tile, or other stone exterior surfaces.
You will need a drill to go into in the masonry, which is not included with the video doorbell kit. When drilling into masonry be careful, go slow, keep the drill bit straight. It's not a race, be patient, and clean up the silica dust after your finished.
And if you have normal wood or vinyl siding just use the included wood screws and your good to go! No matter what type of exterior wall siding your house has. If you have a hardwired setup be sure to cover all the existing wire, you don't want it to show through.
How to set up the ring video doorbell app?
It's very straightforward when following the included instructions. Download the ring app on your iOS or Android smartphone, scan the barcode on the Ring device. Name your device, enter your address, put the doorbell in setup mode, let it do its thing. Once your video doorbell is connected, connect it to your wifi network.
Then after all that has been established and live, start testing all the features and functions. Play around with it for a day and have a buddy stand outside to test the two-way talk with them.
Get very familiar with using the app, that way your ready if an unforeseen event happens. You'll probably change the motion detection settings a few times when initially setting up, based on your preferences. Think like a robber, how would they try to be sneaky entering your property? In the app, you have several options on how much motion detect and set times too.
