SURFACE MOUNTED LIGHT FIXTURE

This is the most basic cookie-cutter standard run-of-the-mill light fixture in the marketplace. This is anything that is not recessed inside the wall or ceilings.

When you shop online or at the stores, they have endless designs and choices to choose from. But they can be as simple as a keyless attic fixture that's a few dollars to something over $200 for a nice modern high-end fixture. They can be fixtures that receive light bulbs to built-in LED strips inside the light fixture itself. This is usually very straightforward as far as the installation goes so I don't need to get too deep into this. Keep reading below to learn more about the other light fixtures.

CHANDELIER

Again they have endless designs and styles to choose from online and in stores. I've seen some chandeliers over the $1000+ price range. This is usually on a high-end home with really high vaulted ceilings. Of course, for most people, this is not the common product you will buy. The vast majority of people will be in the under $200 range for chandelier fixtures.

As for different styles. They come with chains that can be adjusted to whatever height you desire. They make them with different-sized bars and can adjust to different heights too. They make large circles with exposed Edison bulbs that you see on Pinterest.

The main thing to think about when installing the chandelier is the final height placement. Generally, these chandeliers are installed above a dining room table or in a foyer or hallway with vaulted ceilings.

For example, if you're replacing the chandelier in a foyer/hallway. I would suggest you keep the bottom of the fixture above at least 7 ft from the ground. Because most people are not taller than 7ft.

Now for the dining room table, this depends on the size dining table you have. If you google the "general rule of thumb" for chandelier height above dining room tables. They will tell you between 30" to 36".

Again is just a "general rule" not set in stone and honestly, it's your house and you have the final say at the end of the day.

For example, if you have 10 ft plus high ceiling in your dining room. You don't have to follow the 30"-36" rule.

You can have the chandelier hang higher from your dining table. Again this is all aesthetic and preference.

BATHROOM VANITY LIGHT

Usually when shopping online or in the stores the bathroom vanity light fixtures are either wall-mounted above your mirror or even sometimes hung from the ceilings. These would be the two most common spots. And depending on if you have a double vanity in your bathroom. They make one very large light to span the length or most of the time have two matching fixtures side by side. And The globes can either face upward or downward. If you want a lot of focused lighting while in the bathroom I’d recommend you face the globes downward. And if not face the globes upward so the light shoots towards the ceiling and not the sink.

WALL SCONCE LIGHT

This is any type of light fixture inside the home that is mounted on the wall and NOT the ceiling. So think of your stairwell light fixture, or any office rooms with wall-mounted fixtures, to anything else that's installed on the wall, like in hallways, etc. These are pretty basic as well and can either shine the light upwards toward the ceiling or down towards the floor, or both. Again totally your preference.

OUTDOOR COACH LIGHT

This is any wall-mounted light fixture outside your home. Such as the front door porch light, the garage porch lights, and the back porch lights. Just not ceiling mounted like a floodlight.

These can be very basic to high-end fixtures as well. And small in size to very large four feet in height light fixtures. Generally, if the front of your house is two stories and you have a lot of space around each porch light. In this example, I'm talking about two coach lights mounted next to the front door. Some people like to install 3 to 4-foot large coach lights.

The main takeaway with outdoor coach lights is to make sure the product says rain weather-rated exposed to the elements. Something similar to this. And they will usually come with a foam weather seal to install behind the light fixture to prevent water from entering the electrical box.

FLOODLIGHTS

Typical flood light fixtures that are mounted outside only and usually under your roof soffits at the corners of your home. The job of the floodlight is to deter bad guys from entering your property at night when it's dark.

Floodlight fixtures usually can come in motion sensors which is what a lot of people prefer nowadays. So when the sun goes down you can adjust and set the timer for when the floodlight comes on all night long and then turns off in the morning.

For this, to work you have to always make sure the light switch is in the ON position all the time. Otherwise if in the OFF position power never gets to the floodlight.

In today's marketplace, they make security camera floodlight combinations now, such as the RING products. I've installed these as well and can help guide you on setup.

FLOURESCENTS

Typically these styles of light fixtures are installed in closets, pantries, garages, crawl spaces, workshops, covered back porches, and more.

For decades they used a "Ballast" that is inside the light fixture and these ballasts have an expiration date. And when they failed you would replace them. And of course, you normally replace the fluorescent tubes when they burn out.

But nowadays in modern times, the fluorescent fixtures have built-in LED strips inside. And this is what I recommend you buy now because the price is the same as the old-school ballast. But the LED strips should last way longer than the ballast of the past.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS?

Let's talk about light bulbs for a minute. Watts means how much electricity is being used. The standard 60W bulb has been around for a very long time. But the newer LED bulbs use less than 14W generally speaking. And this is good because that means you will pay less money on your utility bill every month.

Just do the math if you have twenty 60W bulbs in your house that equals 1200W of electricity you are using. Instead, if you have the same twenty but LED bulbs at 10W per bulb that equals 200W. Means your saving a whopping 1000W of electricity!

If you have a light fixture and want to replace it with a ceiling fan. This gets a little more complicated because ceiling fans weigh a lot more than a regular light fixture. Check out the other article I wrote in detail explaining this situation. - CEILING FAN
