THINGS TO CONSIDER? 🤔

I get it, you look on Wayfair, Ikea, Amazon, big box stores, and every other online manufacturer you can think of. And if you have not ordered the CEILING FAN yet. Here are a few things to think about beforehand.

When shopping online at these major manufacturers they have an endless database of products to choose from.

First, you should decide if you want a ceiling fan with a lighting kit or no lighting kit? How many blades do you want? Some fans even have retractable blades. Basically, that means when the fan is off the blades close back up inside. Giving it more of a cleaner smaller appearance. Some fans only have two blades, giving it a modern minimalistic look. And other fans have six or more blades that are very wide apart.

Will your ceiling fan require a down rod? A down rod is the extension pole for any high vaulted ceilings. And if you need a down rod replacement. The best way to figure out what size to get is to just re-measure your current existing down rod length. Example, 4 foot down rod.

And it is very, very important to match the new down rod with the new ceiling fan. Because NOT all down rods are created equal and DO NOT fit universally to all ceiling fans. This detail is very important to keep in mind!

Of course, every situation is different. And you need to let me know if you are replacing an old existing ceiling fan with a new fan? If however on the other hand you are replacing a simple lightweight light fixture with a ceiling fan.

It is different and I will explain what needs to happen in order to make it work. For example, the existing electrical box for the light fixture may or usually may not be weight rated for the ceiling fan. What this means is that a new retrofit ceiling fan electrical box will be required for installation. Since ceiling fans are most of the time way heavier in weight than a simple light fixture. The electrical box needs to be able to handle the weight of the fan.

I know this sounds complicated but it's not and I will guide you thru the process when the time comes. But for now, I just want you to be aware of this situation.

On the flip side. If you have a current ceiling fan installed and want to replace it with a simple light fixture. This would be acceptable because the light fixture is lighter in weight than the fan.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS?

The other main thing to think about for this project is the light switches. For example, if you are replacing a ceiling fan in a bedroom in an older house. And the bedroom has only one light switch to control the fan. This means you control the light and fan separately at the fan up on the ceiling. Usually with those two different pull chains. Yes you know what I'm talking about, you've seen those before.

However on new construction homes. Usually from the 1990s to new. The electrical contractors now run what's called a 14/3 or 12/3 Romex wire. Allowing you to have two different light switches to control the ceiling fan. This sounds complicated but it's not ill explain what I mean. the 14 or 12 is the size gauge of the wire. and the "/3" just means three wires. One neutral, one black, and one red wire. To keep it super simple and easy. Just imagine the black and red wires controlling the light and fan separately.

What about remote control ceiling fans? Well for many years the ceiling fan manufacturers used a system that involved a receiver device to be installed up in the ceiling fan canopy and controlled with a remote wirelessly.

This receiver system is not the most ideal since a lot of times the device is way too big to fit in that tiny little canopy cover up top. And over time if some of the electrical wires get pinched up in the bracket and receiver it can short out and blow the motor.

But now some of the manufacturers are wising up and finally building the fans with a built-in receiver. So you no longer have to fuss about this during installation. This is the kind of fan I recommend getting now if you wish to use a remote to control the fan.

MY FAN CAME DAMAGED OR IS MISSING PARTS?

First, relax and breathe…This happens a lot more than you think. Remember your fan has gone through so many different phases in its life cycle.

The product starts off as raw materials, then gets manufactured somewhere, then gets packaged and stored at some warehouse or location. Then eventually you order it online or at the store. Finally, it gets put on a delivery vehicle and dropped at your doorstep.

A lot of moving parts are involved with this entire process. Sometimes quality control has bad days, and people make mistakes. I've seen where the product and box are damaged. This could've been during shipping. I've seen where hardware or parts are missing, which means it failed a QC test.

A lot of times I've run across the glass globe breaking during shipping.

At the end of the day though, if you ordered the CEILING FAN online from a major company. Most of the time as long as you reach back out to the company quickly. They will send you the replacement or damaged product or pieces for free. And I will always 100% let you know if something is damaged or missing before I start building the bed frame.

And if your FAN did end up having a damaged or missing part. Plan for at least a couple of weeks or longer for the manufacturer to fulfill the replacement order. Especially nowadays after the pandemic, everything will take longer than usual. Having realistic expectations will go a long way.
