WOOD VS METAL CABINETS
The two most common materials cabinets are made of are wood and metal. Just about every kitchen and bathroom has wood style cabinets. Other places where you usually find wood cabinets are in the laundry room, garage, closets, libraries, offices, and more. For metal-style cabinets, usually some people opt for in garages, basements, workshops, and most commercial and retail spaces.
Regardless of which type of material your cabinets are. To assemble them is slightly different. With traditional wood style cabinets. They can be put together with wood dowels, screws, and potentially with some metal angle brackets and such.
With metal style cabinets usually are put together with nuts, bolts, washers, lock split washers, and or self-tapping screws.
I will further explain installation considerations with upper and lower base cabinets. And if you want to learn more about METAL CABINETS I wrote another article explaining more considerations there.
UPPER CABINETS
Typically upper style cabinets are usually smaller in size and weight dimensions compared to the lower base cabinets. With upper cabinets, the most important thing is to secure them into wood studs or any structural framing behind the finished wallboard.
In the industry, it's common to use 2" to 2 1/2" wood screws depending on the wall thickness to secure the upper cabinets. If you plan on storing really heavy items in the upper cabinets. I would even recommend we use wood lag bolts to secure in the studs.
The same kind of lag bolts I use when mounting my tv wall brackets. However, when deciding on what to store in your upper cabinets just be cautious of the heaviest items you plan on putting up there. I would not recommend storing more than a couple hundred pounds on smaller lightweight upper cabinets.
The way upper cabinets get hung on the wall is varied depending on how the manufacturer built them. They can be hung simply flat on the drywall with screws. Or they can have metal angeled brackets to hook into the back side of the upper cabinets. Or the cabinets can be installed with a french cleat system.
If you are having multiple upper cabinets assembled and installed next to each other. The other main consideration is that they all be level and straight.
LOWER BASE CABINETS
Typically the lower base cabinets are usually larger in size and weight than the upper cabinets I just talked about. Lower cabinets need to be a lot more heavy-duty because most of the time you are going to be storing very heavy items inside them.
Also because a lot of times these lower base cabinets have to handle the heavy weight of granite and natural stone countertops. So they must be capable of all this weight being applied to them.
After assembling the lower base cabinets and if you have multiple lower cabinets being installed next to each other. Leveling them is the next main consideration. And leveling them on a solid floor foundation as well. If your subfloor is wood and rotting out and damaged. It doesn't matter how well the lower cabinets get installed it'll fail over time because your subflooring has been compromised.
Everything starts with a solid foundation.
MY CABINET CAME DAMAGED OR HAS MISSING PARTS?
First, relax and breatheā¦This happens a lot more than you think. Remember your product has gone through so many different phases in its life cycle.
The product starts off as raw materials, then gets manufactured somewhere, then gets packaged and stored at some warehouse/location. Then eventually you order it online or at the store. Finally, it gets put on a delivery vehicle and dropped at your doorstep.
A lot of moving parts are involved with this entire process. Sometimes quality control has bad days, and people make mistakes. I've seen where the product and box are damaged. This could've been during shipping. I've seen where hardware or parts are missing, which means it failed a QC test.
At the end of the day though, if you ordered the CABINETS online from a major company. Most of the time as long as you reach back out to the company quickly. They will send you the replacement or damaged product or pieces for free. And I will always 100% let you know if something is damaged or missing before I start building.
And if your product did end up having a damaged or missing part. Plan for at least a couple of weeks or longer for the manufacturer to fulfill the replacement order. Especially nowadays after the pandemic, everything will take longer than usual. Having realistic expectations will go a long way.
