MICROWAVE CONSIDERATIONS?

The very first thing you need to do if you have not yet bought your microwave is to measure the dimensions! Typically the width of microwaves is 30". And the 30" is a pretty standard cabinet dimension. As for the height and depth of the microwave, they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Heights can range from 17" to 22" and depths from 20" to 25". They also started making what are called "Low Profile" microwaves. With lower heights in the 10" to 12" range.

This would make sense if your upper cabinets are installed lower on the wall. That way if you had the low profile design it won't feel constricted or too tight while cooking with pots on the stovetop.

But be careful before going this route. Because sometimes I run into kitchens with tiled backsplash behind the microwave. The tile can usually be ceramic or porcelain. Porcelain is harder to drill thru but is a better material.

If your tiled backsplash stops at the current microwave and you buy a new low profile design. That means whatever wall damage or unfinished wall might be exposed. This is something to seriously think about beforehand.

Do you have outside venting or recirculating nonventing? Just open up the top cabinet where the microwave is. Look inside and if you see any type of metal ductwork, then it must vent somewhere outside. If you don't see metal ducting, then it's nonventing and just recirculates the air when you turn the fan on.

The other very important thing to look at before is if your microwave is currently plugged into an outlet or hardwired?

In older homes, I've run across several times a hardwired microwaves. In today's new construction they all have outlets installed ready to plug in. So if you have an older home and the current microwave is hardwired. We need to update the electrical and add an outlet in the upper cabinet.

RANGE HOOD CONSIDERATIONS?

Installing a range hood is very similar to installing the microwave I just talked about above. The main difference is usually the range hood is a lot shallower than most microwaves. And the purpose and job of a range hood are to exhaust all the smoke, oil, and moisture from cooking in your kitchen with the stovetop.

Hopefully, your existing range hood IS connected to an existing metal exhaust ductwork. If it is not, however, this means it's just recirculating inside your kitchen and not exhausting outside.

Again check to see if you already have an outlet installed in the upper cabinet or if it is hardwired.

And if you do not see any metal exhaust ducting in the cabinet, I will help you advise what to do. Sometimes these range hoods are installed directly on the ceiling or wall without any upper cabinets to support them. In this situation, you have more options on different designs and sizes of range hoods if you are not constricted by cabinets.

My other advice I would suggest that is not install-related but kitchen cooking-related is. To ALWAYS have the fan turned on while cooking to exhaust all the moisture and odors etc. Then leave the fan on for a little while after cooking. Some fancy range hoods have timers on them which is a nice feature.

MICROWAVE CAME DAMAGED OR MISSING PARTS?

First, relax and breatheā€¦This happens a lot more than you think. Remember your MICROWAVE OR RANGE HOOD has gone through so many different phases in its life cycle.

The product starts off as raw materials, then gets manufactured somewhere, then gets packaged and stored at some warehouse/location. Then eventually you order it online or at the store. Finally, it gets put on a delivery vehicle and dropped at your doorstep.

A lot of moving parts are involved with this entire process. Sometimes quality control has bad days, and people make mistakes. I've seen where the product and box are damaged. This could've been during shipping. I've seen where hardware or parts are missing, which means it failed a QC test.

At the end of the day though, if you ordered the MICROWAVE OR RANGE HOOD online from a major company. Most of the time as long as you reach back out to the company quickly. They will send you the replacement or damaged product or pieces for free. And I will always 100% let you know if something is damaged or missing before I start working.

And if your MICROWAVE did end up having a damaged or missing part. Plan for at least a couple of weeks or longer for the manufacturer to fulfill the replacement order. Especially nowadays after the pandemic, everything will take longer than usual. Having realistic expectations will go a long way.
