THINGS TO CONSIDER WITH YOUR KITCHEN ISLAND?
I get it, you look on Wayfair, Ikea, Amazon, and every other online manufacturer you can think of. If you have not ordered the kitchen island yet. Here are a few things to think about beforehand.
When shopping online at these major manufacturers they have an endless database of kitchen islands to choose from.
They can be made of steel or wood or both. They can have caster wheels or none at all. They can have doors and drawers or none and just have open shelving. Some have paper towel holders and handles to push the cart around. some have butcherblock hardwood tops and some have granite/marble/natural stone countertops. I’ve put together islands with a stainless steel countertop version. I've also put some together that have extended collapsable countertops. meaning you can fold down half of the countertop when you're not using it and then fold it up while using it to get more real estate to work with.
I would say kitchen islands are most definitely a very versatile and purposeful tool to have in your home kitchen. Especially since these free-floating with caster islands can move out of the way when you need them to. Giving you flexibility on how you utilize your kitchen area.
ADDITIONAL THINGS TO CONSIDER?
The other main thing to take into consideration before buying the kitchen island is. If your budget allows. I always recommend you find a piece of furniture that is mostly if not all made out of real wood. Nowadays, the majority of furniture products are made of MDF/Particle Board materials. Which are NOT real wood. Some products include a few pieces of real wood. Always, always go for the products that contain real wood. They will last longer.
And the biggest issues with MDF/Particle Board are they act like a sponge. So any moisture and excess water that comes in contact with it expands and deforms. Because the materials are very porous and airy, not dense like real natural wood.
If you bought an island that has doors and drawers. I'd plan out what you'd want to store inside? Such as instant pots, mixers, other small appliances, baking supplies, or just larger bulk food storage items? Take a rough estimate on the approximate max weight rating you plan on storing inside the island. And just don't overload that number. Overall these kitchen islands are fairly sturdy and can handle a lot of items being stored inside.
MY KITCHEN ISLAND CAME DAMAGED OR HAS MISSING PARTS?
First, relax and breathe…This happens a lot more than you think. Remember your piece of furniture has gone through so many different phases in its life cycle.
The product starts off as raw materials, then gets manufactured somewhere, then gets packaged and stored at some warehouse/location. Then eventually you order it online or at the store. Finally, it gets put on a delivery vehicle and dropped at your doorstep.
A lot of moving parts are involved with this entire process. Sometimes quality control has bad days, and people make mistakes. I've seen where the product and box are damaged. This could've been during shipping. I've seen where hardware or parts are missing, which means it failed a QC test. Even worse is I've run across MDF that's damaged and they either touch up painted or edge banded onto a damaged piece and still shipped it.
At the end of the day though, if you ordered the kitchen island online from a major company. Most of the time as long as you reach back out to the company quickly. They will send you the replacement or damaged product or pieces for free. And I will always 100% let you know if something is damaged or missing before I start building the kitchen island.
And if your furniture did end up having a damaged or missing part. Plan for at least a couple of weeks or longer for the manufacturer to fulfill the replacement order. Especially nowadays after the pandemic, everything will take longer than usual. Having realistic expectations will go a long way.
