DOORKNOBS

Door knobs come in many different designs and styles to choose from. For most interior closets, pantries, and nonimportant rooms use the dummy or passage knobs. For most bedrooms, bathrooms, and more use a privacy knob or even a keyed knob for those more paranoid about security.

Any of your entry doors like the front door, back or side doors usually all have a handle and deadbolt that is keyed. And hopefully, all keyed alike so you only need to carry one key around instead of multiple different keys.

Door knobs typically come in round or bar-style handles. And I prefer the bar-style handle. To me, this is easier to use if you're entering inside the home with groceries in your hand at the same time.

And to keep any of the keyed doorknobs in good working shape. A product in the marketplace that gets recommended by locksmiths everywhere is called "Houdini" spray lubricant. It comes in a little or large aerosol spray can. How to use it is lightly spray into the keyhole and use the key and work the keyhole several times. Make sure the lubricant gets inside the key cylinders.

This does not harm or gunk up any of the insides of the mechanical parts. This product is recommended by professional locksmiths. It also has a smell that isnt bad and kind of smells like sprite soda.

DEADBOLTS

These are your semi passive security defense systems on your exterior doors. Always make sure all your exterior deadbolts are locked at the end of every night! And like I mentioned earlier I recommend that you have all your exterior deadbolts keyed ALIKE and the same. So you only have one key to carry around instead of several different keys.

Don't forget to use the Houdini Spray lubricant every once in a while to keep the mechanical cylinder parts not frozen during the winter seasons. I like to spray my keyholes every spring and fall. And if the deadbolt is frozen you can use the Houdini spray to unfreeze it.

Another good tip to keep in mind is to have a spare key hidden somewhere else outside of your property. And find a trusted friend or family member to hold onto another copy of your key.

I've been on a job site doing a different install of a doorbell camera. And she didn't have her key on her and we got locked out and had to get a mobile locksmith to break back in.

One more thing I want to mention about deadbolts is the Kwikset Smartkey tool. If you don't have all of your exterior doors keyed alike the same. I'd recommend having them all installed with Kwikset smart key. And this way in the future when you go to change the keys just buy the $12 rekey tool kit at the store and it's easy and fast to rekey all the deadbolts.

KEYPAD AND SMART APP DEADBOLTS

The new style of door locks is the keypad and smart app deadbolts. Let's talk about the keypad first. Typically it's installed on the front door or any other exterior doors. And on the outside of the door lock is the keypad which is usually powered by some AA or AAA batteries. Setting up your passcode is easy and straightforward. This is just a convenience when you don't feel like whipping out your key to open/close the door. Also helps if you need a trusted family member or friend to check in while you are out of town etc.

Of if you run an Airbnb or VRBO business. It's easy to reprogram the keypad for new guests.

The new products on the market are the Smart App Deadbolts. Which functions as your standard deadbolt, a keypad, and connects to your smartphone device.

This way if you are out of town and think you forgot to lock the front door. Just go on the app on your phone and you can tap a button and the deadbolt will lock and unlock.

And if you are out of town and did remember to lock your doors. And if unfortunately, some bad guy does decide to attack and break into your home. If they tamper and mess with the smart app deadbolt. It will and should notify you.

Some of these smart app deadbolts connect to other security systems and devices such as the Ring security cameras and doorbells. Do some homework online and read a bunch of reviews before you decide on which smart app deadbolt to buy. And if you already have Ring cameras and doorbells installed in your home.

Look for smart deadbolts that will connect and sync with your Ring system. This would be an easy integration of your current devices.
