PRE PLANNING STEPS
Before even tackling this type of project you must pre plan how you want to install this accent wall to your current existing finished wall. The main finished wall types in residential include; drywall, wallpapering, another wood wallboard, 1/4" lauan, old school lathe and plaster, brick, natural stone, cement block wall, and more.
Once you determine what type of finished wall surface you currently have. Next, you need to decide the total square footage of the wall you want to install the accent boards on?
To simply do this, let's say you have one wall and its drywall and only has a couple of electrical outlets on it, and that's it. In this example you measure the wall and it is 8ft high by 12 ft long. This would be a 96 sqft wall.
Maybe you want to cover all the walls in a bedroom or living room. Just be sure to accurately measure the space. If you have a window just minus the window sqft from the total sqft of that wall. Simple and easy.
Now you know what your current finished wall surface is and the total square feet of wall needed for installation. Then the fun part is you know get to decide what color, sizes, and features of wood board materials you want to install for this project.
After you have shopped all around and decided on the material to use. Online they will have a lot more options and varieties to choose from compared to the local home improvement big box stores. However, if you buy in the stores locally they will have stock ready to be delivered. Instead of online where it could take a long long time to get materials delivered and if some of the product is damaged. You will have to wait even longer to get replacement products. So I would suggest shopping locally at big box stores first and see what they all have in stock currently. If you cant find what you like in the store, then start shopping online.
In the next part, I will talk about jobsite considerations to be aware of during installation.
ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
For example, let's say your current finished wall surface is either; brick, stone, concrete, or any kind of masonry surface. Typically these wood accent boards are finish nailed to the studs on a wood drywall application.
But in this situation I have to add what is called "Furring Strips" and this is very common and typical when they hang sheetrock on cement block walls. That would be the first prep step involved. To make this easy to understand I secure the wood furring strips to the actual cement block wall. then the wood accent boards finish nail to these furring stip boards.
I would do the same if you have a really old antique lathe and plaster walls. I would not do this if you have a normal wood stud with drywall. Because I would just finish nail directly to the wood studs like the way the drywall is secured. That would make the wood accent boards go horizontal, meaning left and right on the wall.
However, if you wanted the wood accent boards to face vertically. Then I would have to revise this planning step beforehand. And add the furring strips behind the wood accent boards.
Another major consideration is if you have baseboards at the bottom and or crown molding at the top of the wall.
In either case, typically the wood accent boards would install in between the finish trim boards.
MORE CONSIDERATIONS
The other thing to think about is the electrical outlets and switches on the wall. We have to use longer screws for them and I will explain these little details before installation occurs.
And if any of the walls will have exposed exterior corners. We need to think about what type of trim to use to cover the exposed outside corners.
You don't have to just use the store-bought wood accent barn boards. Again this is one of those fun creative projects. So whatever you get inspired by on Pinterest and Instagram. Just show me pictures of the ideas you are thinking about. And I can help you create what you envision as the final product.
If you wanted to install the wood accent boards on the ceiling I can help with that too. The concept is the same. I would find the ceiling wood joists and can finish nail accent boards to that. However, if you have an old-school lathe and plaster I would advise installing the furring strips first.
It is very uncommon to see any type of masonry ceiling in a residential application.
